The day of the State Funeral of Queen Elizabeth II will be a Bank Holiday

The King has given his approval for the day of the State Funeral of Queen Elizabeth II to be a Bank Holiday in the United Kingdom.

His Majesty was asked at the Accession Council for his agreement to the decision and he readily gave it.

It was a poignant moment for the new Monarch but he answered the question in a clear, firm voice.

It means that the day of the funeral, expected to be Monday September 19th 2022, will be a day off work and school for people across the country. Shops can also close or open for shorter hours if they wish. It means everyone will have an opportunity to watch the funeral and pay their respects, if they wish.

Further details of Her Late Majesty’s funeral are expected to be given in the coming days. Official mourning began at the announcement of her death. The King has already asked for royal mourning to continue for seven days after the funeral.

Her Late Majesty is currently lying in peace at Balmoral where she died on September 8th 2022. Her coffin will be moved to Edinburgh in the coming days before being taken to London. It is expected a lying in state will take place at Westminster Hall before the State Funeral.

The King has a private meeting with the Dean of Westminster on September 10th 2022 – it is widely expected that Her Late Majesty’s funeral will be held at Westminster Abbey.
