Lady Louise and James, Viscount Severn were on hand as the Commonwealth Games continued in Birmingham, joining their parents for another day of competition.
The Wessexes attended several events, among them badminton, weight lifting, and swimming. The Royal Family Twitter account tweeted, “Great to be back at @Birminghamcg22! “The Earl and Countess of Wessex and their family have arrived at the NEC for an afternoon of Commonwealth sport. “First stop: Badminton 🏸”
Sophie, meanwhile, became an unofficial royal photographer, sharing snaps and videos of the competitions to the Royal Family’s social media accounts. The Countess of Wessex captured a video of the moment Canadian women’s weightlifter Maude Charron won gold and broke a Commonwealth Games record.
The Earl of Wessex was on hand to present the medals for the men’s 50m freestyle S7 final at the Sandwell Aquatics Centre.

Lady Louise and James rarely attend royal engagements with their parents, and typically only when it’s a family event involving sports or environmental action. Their parents styled them as the children of an earl from birth to allow them greater privacy, with the understanding that they will not someday take on royal duties themselves.
Other than the rare engagement with their parents, the Wessex children attend greater family gatherings like Trooping the Colour and Christmas at Sandringham.
At the end of the day, the Royal Family social media posted: “Thank you for a fantastic afternoon at @birminghamcg22 – it was great to see so many Commonwealth athletes competing at the top of their game!”
Members of the British Royal Family are attending the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham as The Queen continues her summer holiday at Balmoral. The Prince of Wales officially opened the Commonwealth Games and since then, the Wessexes and the Princess Royal have attended competitions and events.
