Queen Margrethe cancels New Year’s events

Queen Margrethe of Denmark has cancelled the planned New Year events at the beginning of 2022.

The Danish Royal House said the Queen has cancelled the banquet for the government, Speaker of the Danish Parliament, representatives of official Denmark and the Royal Court, set to take place on New Year’s Day. This is in line with government advice on the ongoing global health situation.

Denmark has recently reintroduced restrictions due to a surge in COVID-19. Schools are to switch to online learning by mid-month, and restaurants and bars must close by midnight beginning on 10 December.

Other events cancelled include the New Year levees scheduled for 4 and 5 January. These were to be held for the Danish Supreme Court, Officer Corps of The Royal Life Guard, The Guard Hussar Regiment, diplomatic corps, representatives from royal patronages and national organisations, and Defence and the Danish Emergency Management Agency.

However, Queen Margrethe’s annual New Year’s Eve address to Denmark will still take place. The Queen will speak to the Danes live at 18.00 local time on 31 December.

People can also send New Year wishes to the Danish Royal Family online on the family’s official website. The option to send virtual greetings will be available beginning on New Year’s Day and continue throughout that week.
