King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden presents research scholarships

King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden has always been concerned with strengthening research on the environment and research topics. On 8 December, the Swedish King awarded scholarships from King Carl XVI Gustaf’s 50th anniversary Fund for Science, Technology and the Environment to 20 researchers.

His Majesty presented the scholarships in the Royal Palace’s Bernadotte Library. Unfortunately, last year’s ceremony was cancelled due to the global health situation, and so, the King awarded both the 2020 and 2021 scholarships on Wednesday.

The recipients receive a sum of 85.000 or 100.000 Swedish crowns. They are researchers who have written interesting articles, books or reports on topics that the King believes are significant and important.

Among the recipients were Leonie Esters from Uppsala University, who wrote about the turbulence in the oceans and its significance for the uptake of atmospheric greenhouse gases and Patrik Henriksson from Stockholm University, who wrote about global collaboration to reduce antibiotic use in cultivated seafood.

After the ceremony, Professor Scott Edwards, a professor of environment and science, gave a short lecture. He was appointed the 25th recipient of King Carl XVI Gustaf’s professorship in environmental science on 1 December.

Professor Scott Vernon Edwards was born in Hawaii and is a US citizen. He is the Alexander Agassiz Professor of Organismal and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University and the Curator of Ornithology at Harvard’s associated museum, the Museum of Comparative Zoology.

King Carl XVI Gustaf’s 50th anniversary Fund for Science, Technology and the Environment works to promote research, technological development and entrepreneurship. In turn, it contributes to the sustainable use of natural resources and the conservation of biological diversity.

Winners of the scholarships are announced each year by the board of the King’s 50th Anniversary Fund on the King’s birthday, 30 April. Later in the year, the scholarships are presented at the Royal Palace.
