Queen Letizia opens FAO’s World Food Forum via video call

To close her work week, Queen Letizia virtually connected with Rome on Friday to open the World Food Day conference.

Her Majesty has made a trip to the Italian capital almost every year to visit the Food and Agriculture Organisation headquarters, which are located in the centre of Rome, right in front of Circo Massimo.

However, due to current travel restrictions, Queen Letizia was unable to make it in person, sending a video message instead.

But her commitment to the cause was no less strong than in previous years. In her remarks, Her Majesty highlighted the importance of young entrepreneurs in the food supply chain to further their vision for more sustainable and climate-neutral farming, better salaries for workers, and more equitable distribution of resources, so that no one in the world is left hungry for wanting for better quality nourishment.

Queen Letizia also touched upon an issue that, over the last few years, has gained more visibility: meals provided by the school, which, for too many children, are the only secure food supply during the day. The Queen called for those to be healthier and made with ingredients that pass quality tests and are also sourced from sustainable supply chains.

To close her intervention, Queen Letizia thanked everyone present for their commitment to sustainable development, in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals put in place by the United Nations for 2030. Food is a central element of those SDGs since it not only provides nourishment and health, but it also provides jobs, which help combat poverty and, when those jobs come from newer business models, also help in building a more equitable society globally.

The FAO is an organisation issued from the United Nations, which is why Queen Letizia also referenced the UN General Assembly that took place a few days ago in New York City, and how the topics touched on that occasion match perfectly with the FAO’s objectives for this forum.

Together with Queen Letizia, the FAO World Food Forum was also graced by the interventions of Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, His Holiness Pope Francis and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi.

The video projected seems to have been shot a few days before, specifically on the 28th of September, as Queen Letizia is seen wearing the same dress she sported for the reception of the Angolan Presidential Couple.
