As expected, The Queen will attend the christening of Princess Charlotte of Cambridge. The baptism takes place this Sunday, July 5th, at the church of St Mary Magdalene on the Sandringham Estate.

Wellwishers will also get a chance to see the newest member of the House of Windsor as the paddock next to the church will be opened to allow them to catch a glimpse of the Cambridge family on this special day. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince George will bring Princess Charlotte to the church for the ceremony which will take place nine weeks and one day after the royal baby’s arrival on May 2nd.
The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh along with The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall will be present as Charlotte Elizabeth Diana is christened by the Archbishop of Canterbury who will be supported by the Reverend Canon Jonathan Riviere who is Rector of the Sandringham group of parishes. Michael and Carole Middleton will also be present along with other family members. Prince Harry won’t be there – he is now in Africa on a long planned trip.
Although we don’t know the names of Charlotte’s godparents yet, the absence of her uncle from the ceremony makes it unlikely that Harry will be one of her sponsors although proxies at the font are a long standing royal tradition. The names of George’s godparents weren’t announced until the day he was christened and it may well be the same for his little sister.
Princess Charlotte will be baptized in the same church as her paternal grandmother whose name she also shares. Diana, Princess of Wales was christened at St Mary Magdalene on August 30th 1961 when she was around the same age as her granddaughter is now. The church was also the setting for the christening of Charlotte’s paternal great, great grandfather, King George VI. Princess Eugenie was also baptized there in 1990.
And the choice of St Mary Magdalene means this will be a real family event. As well as the links with past christenings, it is close to the Cambridges’s Norfolk home, Anmer Hall, where they have spent most of this early part of Princess Charlotte’s life. And this Sunday we’ll get the chance to see the new princess again as she makes her first big public appearance on the day of her christening.
