This week, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie of York are heading to Germany to promote British interests. This is the Princesses’ first engagement in their own right. Before, they led a royal life, but without much of a public role. Recently graduating from university, the Princesses aren’t expected to take on a royal life.
In The Queen’s idea of a cost-conscious, slimmed down Monarchy, the core six members of the Royal Family are the only ones who take a major public role. While Prince Charles, William and Harry’s roles are certain, the same can’t be said for the rest of the members of the Royal Family. Over the past few years, The Queen has had to stop subsidising some of her more distant relatives. For example, Prince and Princess Michael of Kent had to begin paying rent on their Kensington Palace apartments which were previously supplied by The Queen.
The question is, how many members of the royal family can take public roles. Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie were, only a few months ago, mentioning looking for careers after coming out of university. Now, according to some royal sources, they have settled that they’d like to become full-time royals.
The same sources suggest that this big first step is to get the Princesses fully introduced into a royal life, ready for engagements of all varieties.
Whilst they may be able to be supported at the moment by The Queen and their father, The Duke Of York, the question of whether they’ll continue to be supported by the future King when he comes to the throne is a whole different ball game.
It is expected that Prince Charles may cut off some of his extended relatives from being royally active and focus on higher ranking members of the Royal Family. Whether this is a good thing or not remains to be seen.
As a point of interest, it’ll be interesting to see where Beatrice and Eugenie go next with this and whether the rumours of taking up a Royal Life is true. Moreover, will they do it alone, or will the Princesses’ boyfriends join them on future engagements. Whatever happens, we’ll be intrigued to see!

I think it is marvelous that Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie have taken this trip to Germany to promote the UK, the British Monarchy and the British Commonwealth. This kind of work would be a good career move for each of them because they are delightfully charming and very personable, which is a tremendous asset to Britain in all aspects.
