Will The Queen oversee the arrival of the UK’s new Prime Minister at Balmoral?

The Queen could receive her new Prime Minister for the first time at Balmoral.

Her Majesty is currently in residence at her Scottish home with her planned stay there traditionally lasting until early autumn.

However, the Conservative Party will choose its new leader on September 5th 2022, when the results of a ballot of members across the country is announced. Either Foreign Secretary, Liz Truss, or former Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, will replace Boris Johnson.

The Queen was reported to be keen to return to London for the final audience with Mr Johnson and the reception of his replacement on September 6th 2022. It’s now believed she will remain at Balmoral for the meetings after discussions about the practicalities of the 96 year old Monarch making a 1,000 mile return trip between Scotland and London.

There is nothing to stop The Queen holding these important audiences outside of London although Her Majesty has always conducted them at Buckingham Palace during her 70 year reign. Windsor Castle had also been suggested as a location for the meetings. The Queen’s great grandfather, Edward VII, once received a new Prime Minister at Biarritz when a sudden change in power occurred while he was on holiday.

Boris Johnson announced his plans to step down in July. The new Prime Minister will be the fifteenth to serve in the reign of Elizabeth II.
