King Charles III’s Coronation, just months from now, will contain many ancient rituals but it appears that one tradition could be headed for the history books.
It’s been reported that His Majesty could discard an outfit worn by kings for centuries in favour of something more modern.
Kings traditionally wear breeches and silk stockings for their coronations. His Majesty’s grandfather, King George VI, was portrayed in this outfit for his Coronation portrait in 1937.
However, The Sun has reported that King Charles III could, instead, choose military uniform for his Coronation at Westminster Abbey.
The paper says it’s believed this outfit will be more appropriate as courtiers think the breeches and stockings look ”too dated”.
Buckingham Palace hasn’t commented.
Another major change to the Coronation is already under consideration. It’s understood that the royal dukes won’t make individual acts of homage to the Monarch after he is crowned. Instead, only the Prince of Wales will pay homage to King Charles III at the Abbey.
St. Edward’s Crown, which will be used for the moment of coronation, has already been removed from the Tower of London to be prepared for the ceremony.
King Charles III and Queen Camilla will be crowned on May 6th 2023.
