The Earl of Wessex presents the final medals of the 2022 Commonwealth Games

The last medal ceremony of the Commonwealth Games has been overseen by the Earl of Wessex.

The Earl, who is Vice Patron of Commonwealth Sport, presented the medals in the Men’s Hockey event to bring down the curtain on the sporting action at Birmingham 2022.

Australia claimed gold with India taking silver. England won bronze.

Prince Edward also spent time thanking the support teams working on the sport including the ball girls and boys.

Earlier, he had paid tribute to the organisers and volunteers across the Games. He spent time at the Games Multi-Agency Command Centre where police and government agencies work to ensure things run smoothly. There was also a visit to the International Broadcast Centre which has allowed millions of people around the world to enjoy the sporting action.

The Earl of Wessex has attended dozens of events at the Commonwealth Games, as has the Countess of Wessex. The couple have often been accompanied by their children, Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor and James, Viscount Severn. The Earl will deliver the final remarks at the Closing Ceremony for the Games on August 8th.

Birmingham 2022, the 22nd Commonwealth Games, has been attended by hundreds of thousands of spectators over ten days. It was officially opened by the Prince of Wales on behalf of The Queen. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Princess Charlotte, the Princess Royal and Sir Timothy Laurence have all attended events during the Games.

The next Commonwealth Games will take place in Victoria, Australia in 2026.
