Prince & Princess of Wales

The Princess of Wales struggles to contain her emotions as she shares how Prince Louis learned of The Queen’s death

The Princess of Wales teared up during a walkabout at Windsor Castle, recalling the words her youngest son said about his late great-grandmother and great-grandfather.

Catherine, who joined her husband William and brother- and sister-in-law the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on a walkabout outside the gates of Windsor Castle on Saturday afternoon, was overheard telling a group of children and their parents that four-year-old Prince Louis had said that “at least Grannie is with Great-Grandpa now.”

Catherine could be seen tearing up talking about the moment, and also told another group of mourners that “at times like this you’ve got to come together.”

Prince Louis has only made a handful of public appearances in his life, perhaps most famously being the royal scene-stealer at the Platinum Jubilee celebrations earlier this summer.

He was stood next to his grannie Elizabeth during the flypast of Trooping the Colour, pointing out aircrafts and talking with her about what they could see.

Later in the Platinum Jubilee weekend, he was an animated watcher at the People’s Pageant, flitting back and forth from the laps of his parents to his grandfather, the new King Charles III.

The new Princess of Wales presented a united front with her family on Saturday afternoon, her first public appearance since the death of Elizabeth II on 8 September.

In a tribute to his late grandmother, William spoke loving of the monarch, saying that “while I will grieve her loss, I also feel incredibly grateful. I have had the benefit of The Queen’s wisdom and reassurance into my fifth decade. My wife has had twenty years of her guidance and support. My three children have got to spend holidays with her and create memories that will last their whole lives.”

The Prince and Princess of Wales were given a title upgrade on 9 September during King Charles III’s accession speech, making their three children Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis of Wales.
