The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are set to board the Royal Train for a three-day trip across the United Kingdom to visit communities and celebrate those who have been working hard throughout the pandemic in their areas.
Kensington Palace announced the news on Saturday evening, noting that William and Kate will make stops in England, Wales, and Scotland to “pay tribute to the incredible work of individuals and organisations that have gone above and beyond in response to the coronavirus pandemic.”
All stops will be made following government guidelines and following protocols and restrictions set to curb the spread of the coronavirus. Kensington Palace further noted that the royal couple would meet with “frontline workers, volunteers, care home staff, teachers, schoolchildren and young people” to learn more about their work during this challenging year.
“Many of the engagements undertaken by Their Royal Highnesses will celebrate community spirit and demonstrate the impact of the public’s generosity this year, by showcasing organisations and initiatives that have been supported by community relief funds, including NHS Charities Together,” Kensington Palace said.
The Duke and Duchess will also spotlight the arts, heritage and live performance sectors, which have been especially hard hit during the pandemic. Their tour will include live performances by local artists at several stops throughout the UK to highlight the organisations and projects at each stop.
A spokesperson for the couple said, “The Duke and Duchess are very much looking forward to shining a spotlight on the incredible work that has been done across the country throughout this difficult year and to sharing their gratitude on behalf of the nation for all those supporting their local communities ahead of the Christmas holidays.”
Ahead of their tour, William and Kate commissioned a piece of art by 10-year-old artist Joe Whale to represent their trip. Whale’s artwork was shared on the royal couple’s social media with the note, “Thank you Joe and keep up the great work!”
The Royal Train Tour will mark the first time William and Kate have used the exclusive train.
