The 16-metre-high clock tower in Seymour Square was completed in 1928, and is Marlborough’s monument to pay tribute to the locals who died in the First World War.
The War Memorial and Clock Tower was unveiled in Seymour Square, Blenheim in 1928 and serves as the Marlborough province’s principal monument to residents killed during the First World War.
A variety of stone was procured from location around the province to construct the tower. The only stone not used from the province is that of Australian sandstone which is symbolic of the New Zealand and Australian collaboration during World War I.
Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre will host the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge later on Thursday. Attending will be the Prime Minister, Hon John Key and Bronagh Key, as well as the Leader of the Opposition, Hon David Cunliffe and Karen Price-Cunliffe.
The Royal couple will tour the museum with Sir Peter Jackson and view an interior exhibition of WWI aircraft before moving outside to view the static WWI display.
A Flying Day has been coordinated to for entertainment for William and Catherine as well as the public in attendance. A group of heritage aircraft will be on display and several will take to the air during the visit.
In the evening the Duke and Duchess will attend a state reception at Government House in Wellington. Prince William is to deliver a short speech and unveil a portrait of Her Majesty.
