The Duchess of Cambridge begins her visit to Scotland with a focus on community support

The Duchess of Cambridge joined her husband in Scotland on Monday, with a visit to Turning Point Scotland in North Lanarkshire, where they spoke to those supported by the social care services organisation.

During their visit, William and Kate heard more about the programmes offered by Turning Point Scotland through its Turnaround programme, which offers support to “address the complex and interrelated issues of offending behaviours and problematic use of alcohol and other drugs, which often result in patters of re-offending,” per the organisation’s website.

Turning Point Scotland was founded in 1999 and supports the most vulnerable in society, whether they’re dealing with homelessness, addiction, or mental health issues “to halt these cycles and address fundamental issues in order to ensure that those they support are able to live mentally healthy and happy lives.”

William and Kate joined in a video call with staff and service users of the organisation’s Glasgow Overdose Response Team to talk about addiction, which Kate has made a cornerstone of her royal work. The response team provides real-time support to substance users in crisis to prevent fatal accidents from occurring.

William told them that help usually comes after “you get passed to the next one. But what is crucial is how you capture that big net in one go that really matters, which is what you guys do here.”

Afterwards, the Glasgow Overdose Response Team posted on its Twitter account: “Our team were asked to give a briefing on their work and its impact to Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, who showed a real interest in the challenges faced and progress made so far.”

Turning Point Scotland wrote: “Today we had the honour of a visit from the Royal couple Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge… to our North Lanarkshire service.”

The royal couple’s visit to Turning Point Scotland was their first joint engagement on their visit to Scotland. They will visit organisations in Edinburgh, Fife and Orkney throughout the week. Royal Central will bring you full coverage of their visit.
