The Prince of Wales receives major award for inter-faith work

The Prince of Wales has been presented with a prestigious award for his inter-faith work. He has been awarded the 2020 Bridge Award from the Council of Christians and Jews.

The Council of Christians and Jews is the oldest inter-faith charity in the UK and was established in 1942. It focuses on bringing Jews and Christians together through education, dialogue, and social action. The Bridge Award recognises an individual “who has made an exceptional and leading contribution to building bridges between people in a Christian-Jewish or wider setting.”

He was presented with the award at Spencer House in London. It was announced in 2020, but the presentation itself was delayed due to the global health crisis. At the ceremony, the Prince emphasised that caring for the sick, consoling those grieving, and supporting people socially and financially should be done across all faiths.

The Prince of Wales has focused on inter-faith causes for all of his adult life. Although some have questioned him, as he will be Supreme Governor of the Church of England when he takes the throne, it has remained important to him. “Trying to build bridges between faith communities and to deepen mutual understanding, has been a major part of my life’s work. So, I cannot tell you how profoundly grateful I am for such a very special accolade,” he has said.

Prince Charles has discussed how he feels that while his official title will be “Defender of the Faith”, he believes that it will be his role to defend and protect all faiths. In a 2015 interview, he said: “I mind about the inclusion of other people’s faiths and their freedom to worship in this country, and it’s always seemed to me that while at the same time being Defender of the Faith you can also be protector of faiths.”
