The Duchess of Cornwall shares her favourite children’s books alongside Elmer the Elephant

The Duchess of Cornwall spent her day focusing on children’s literacy at two different events in London. She started by visiting Griffin Primary School to open a new library, and then hosted a storytime for children for the Literacy Trust.

The Duchess has made literacy a priority, and has been made Patron of several organisations that promote and support literacy. Griffin Primary School is one of six schools taking part in the Life-Changing Libraries scheme. The scheme was started by How to Train Your Dragon author, Cressida Cowell, who has partnered with BookTrust to promote reading for pleasure to children.

Camilla and Cressida spent their morning with Year 2 Griffin students reading The Tiger Who Came to Tea by Judith Kerr to launch the new library of 1,000 new books for the school. The students then sang a song for her, celebrating their love of books.

The Duchess then spent the afternoon in St. James’s Park promoting a new project for two of her patronages, Literacy Trust and Elephant Family. The Trust is launching the Elephant Story Trail, a path following special elephant herds from Green Park to St. James’s Park. Families can download and print off a specially-illustrated map to follow the herds, and promote both reading for pleasure and the elephants’ plight.

She read Elmer by David McKee to a group of students from Vauxhall Primary School. All of the students were also given a copy of Elmer to take home with them afterwards.

Camilla’s late brother, Mark Shand, co-founded Elephant Family, and she and the Prince of Wales are co-patrons of the foundation. The new exhibitions around London have been created with CoExistence Story to bring awareness to the impact of humans on elephants, and to promote solutions to human-wildlife conflict.
