King Carl Gustaf holds audience with Speaker of the Parliament following political crisis

On Monday, His Majesty King Carl Gustaf of Sweden gave priority to an unscheduled audience to the Speaker of the Swedish Parliament, Andreas Norlén. The audience was held in one of the private rooms at Drottningholm Palace in Stockholm. During the audience, the King was informed that the Swedish Parliament had during the day issued a motion of no confident against the Swedish Prime Minister.

The King was informed on the political crisis that Sweden is now in and His Majesty thanked the Speaker for the update and expressed that he wanted to be updated on how the process continues.

Only a few hours this audience, the Swedish Parliament voted in favour of a request to direct a motion of no confident against Prime Minister Stefan Löfven. A total of 181 members of parliament voted in favour of the motion of no confident, 109 members voted against and 51 members abstained. This is the first time in history that mistrust has been declared against a Swedish Prime Minister.

Now that the Swedish Parliament has concluded that it does not have confidence in the Prime Minister, the entire government must resign or announce a special election. The government must decide within a week of the no-confidence motion if an election will be held. If the Prime Minister and the Government resign instead, the President of the Parliament will begin his task of preparing proposals for a new Prime Minister.

The Swedish monarch will have no role in this political process that is now taking place in Sweden. The tasks of the monarch are ultimately regulated by the constitution. With the 1974 formation of government, the Swedish monarch was deprived of almost all the previous constitutional powers under the 1809 form of government which, at least in theory, was very extensive because they gave the King all executive power.
