Sir Elton John receives very special honour from the Prince of Wales

Sir Elton John can add yet another accolade to his long list of achievements – the 74-year-old has been made a member of the Order of the Companions of Honour.

The singer received the award for his Services to Music and Charity. The special award is granted to those who have made a major contribution to the arts, science, medicine, or government over a long period of time. In addition to the Monarch, there can only be 65 members at any given time. Other members of the exclusive group include Dame Maggie Smith and Sir Paul McCartney.

The Prince of Wales presented Sir Elton with the honour during an Investiture Ceremony at Windsor Castle on Wednesday, 10 November, The musician wrote on social media following the ceremony: “An incredible honour to be made a member of the Order of Companions of Honour today in acknowledgement of my services to music and the fight to end AIDS.”

The Order is not the first honour the star has received from the royal family. In 1998, he was knighted by The Queen.

Sir Elton John was famously friends with Diana, Princess of Wales and following Diana’s death, the singer performed “Candle in the Wind” at her funeral. In the years following, has maintained a relationship with her two sons. In 2007 to mark 10 years after Diana’s passing, Sir Elton joined Prince William and Prince Harry on stage at Wembley Stadium in London for a tribute concert.

The singer and his husband David Furnish were also guests at Prince William’s 2011 wedding to Kate Middleton. When it was time for Prince Harry to marry Meghan Markle, the star not only attended the wedding but also performed at their reception.
