The proclamation of King Charles III has taken place at St. James’s Palace in London.
Just after 11am on the morning of September 10th 2022, the Garter King of Arms read the proclamation which had earlier been read to the Accession Council.
A fanfare sounded as the Garter King of Arms, with the Earl Marshall, walked on to the balcony of Friary Court at St. James’ Palace. A crowd of around 800 people had been admitted to the court to hear the historic declaration.
The ancient ceremony rang out, leading to the moment when the new King was declared with the traditional words ”the Prince Charles Philip Arthur George, is now, by the death of our late Sovereign of happy memory, become our only lawful and rightful liege lord, Charles III, by the grace of God, of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, and of his other realms and territories, King.”
Following the declaration, a cry of God Save the King went up and the national anthem was played. Those admitted to watch the ceremony joined in and at the end, a spontaneous cheer and round of applause broke out.
The military then performed their own traditional three cheers for the new Monarch. However, they were joined by the crowd, leading to a loud and joyous show of support for King Charles III.
His Majesty had earlier addressed the Accession Council and signed its declarations, writing ‘Charles R’ in public for the first time.
King Charles III took the throne on September 8th 2022 on the death of his mother, Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
