The King shows brief glimpse of deep grief as he talks of his dread at losing his mother

King Charles III gave a brief glimpse of the deep grief he is living through as he met his Prime Minister for the first time.

As Liz Truss offered her condolences to His Majesty during their first audience at Buckingham Palace, the Monarch spoke of his pain.

”A moment I’ve been dreading,” he confided, before adding ”as I know a lot of people have.”

In another indication of the pain he is experiencing on a personal level, he tried to smile as he said ”we try and keep everything going.”

And showing that he is putting his duties first, he then invited the Prime Minister to join him for their official audience.

During the brief chat caught on camera, before the private meeting began, King Charles also expressed his gratitude for the support he has been shown by people. He told Liz Truss ”it’s been so touching, this afternoon, when we arrived here, all those people come to give their condolences.”

The King met the Prime Minister at Buckingham Palace on September 9th 2022, shortly after he arrived in London from Balmoral. Just three days earlier, Ms Truss had been invited to form a government in a meeting at Balmoral with Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. It would be the last duty Her Late Majesty performed. She died on the afternoon of September 8th 2022.

King Charles and Queen Camilla had been greeted by large crowds on their return to the Palace. As their car approached the gates, loud cries of ”God Save The King” were heard. The King and Queen got out and went to speak to the crowds, with many offering their sympathies and their support. Their Majesties also viewed some of the thousands of floral tributes left in memory of Queen Elizabeth II.

King Charles III will meet the Prime Minister again on September 10th 2022 when he holds an audience with her and the Cabinet.
