King Charles III

Charles and Camilla to visit Canada

Continuing on with a rota of tours to mark The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, Clarence House announced Monday morning that The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall would be visiting Canada in May.

No specific dates have been announced yet, but they will be visiting Newfoundland and Labrador, Ottawa, and the Northwest Territories over the course of their three-day tour.

The Governor General’s office released a statement this morning announcing, “Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall have accepted the Government of Canada’s invitation to undertake a three-day Royal Tour in May… This visit is a chance for us to showcase the evolution of our country, our diverse and inclusive society, as well as the resilience of Indigenous communities.”

Interestingly, the tour is quite limited, though the Canadian provinces and territories have only recently removed public health restrictions.

The Department of Canadian Heritage will be releasing a detailed itinerary of the 2022 Royal Tour in the coming weeks.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau released a statement, remarking that it is “an opportunity for Their Royal Highnesses to take part in various initiatives to honour The Queen’s service and dedication to our country, and meet with inspiring Canadians who are making a difference in our communities.”

Trudeau’s government has yet to announce concrete plans to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee in Canada aside from lighting federal buildings on 2 June, noting in his 6 February Accession Day statement that they would be announced at a later date. The federal government has not announced a Platinum Jubilee medal, either; however, Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan, and Alberta have announced provincial medals.

Prince Charles has visited Canada twelve times for official tours, with his first visit with his parents and sister in 1970. His last official visit was in 2017, when he and Camilla visited for three days to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation. He has also visited seven times on personal visits.
