The view from the Mall – an early start and lots of fun as the Platinum Jubilee party gets under way

In the end, the sun shone for the Platinum Jubilee. After days of changeable weather and a few heavy downpours, the skies above London were bright blue for the start of four days of celebrations that have been seventy years in the making.

Not that would have deterred the most determined Jubilee goers. Some had been camping out for days to get the best spots for the celebrations while huge numbers made their way to the heart of the royal city for the festivities.

The best spots along the Mall were gone by 5am on the morning of June 2 2022. Our reporter, Sydney Zatz, said that the front rows were already filling up when she arrived just as dawn broke.

Our Chief Reporter, Kristin Contino, found herself several rows deep as she went in search of party goers as dawn broke.

One of them, Anna from Poland, could barely contain her happiness at the prospect of the Platinum Jubilee unfolding, telling Royal Central that ”I am so excited to be here with you guys.”

Lesley from Canada said ”I flew all the way over for The Queen’s Jubilee. I am so excited to be in the crowd and to be at this absolutely amazing, historical occasion, to see The Queen and to celebrate with everyone else.”

They were all there for Trooping the Colour, the first big event of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations. The Queen is set to take the salute from the Palace balcony around lunchtime while the Royal Family will make a major appearance soon afterwards.

And the crowds will keep on coming through the weekend as the Mall plays host to the lighting of the Principal Beacon for the Jubilee as well as the Platinum Party at the Palace and the Platinum Pageant.

It’s a Jubilee like no other and the sun is definitely shining on it.
