The Queen’s Christmas Day broadcast tops TV ratings

The Queen’s moving tribute to Prince Philip was the most watched TV broadcast on Christmas Day in the UK.

The Christmas Speech topped the ratings with 7.4 million people tuning in .

Her Majesty’s broadcast focused on the life and legacy of her late husband and included some very personal references to the Prince who died in April at the age of 99.

“That mischievous, inquiring twinkle at the end was as bright as when I first saw him,” The Queen said of the Duke of Edinburgh as she reflected on the sadness of spending a first Christmas without him at her side. She added ”as much as I and my family miss him, I know he would want us to enjoy Christmas. We felt his presence as we, like millions around the world, readied ourselves for Christmas.”

The Queen’s annual broadcast is always among the most watched programmes on Christmas Day in the UK but this year, it proved particularly popular.

The second most watched show was the festive edition of Strictly Come Dancing while Call The Midwife was third on the list.
