The Queen and her heirs pose for portrait marking the new decade

The Queen and the three princes who will in turn inherit the Crown have been caught on camera in a new portrait to mark the start of the 2020s. And in the background of this historic image is the throne that links the destinies of all four.

The photo was taken by Ranald Mackechnie on December 18th when the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Cambridge and Prince George joined the Queen to make Christmas puddings in support of the Royal British Legion, images that were shared in this year’s Christmas Day message. Elizabeth II and her heirs are seen in the Throne Room of Buckingham Palace.

It’s the third official portrait of the Queen and her three kings in waiting. The first, famous image was taken in October 2013 following the christening of Prince George when all four were captured for history by Jason Bell. In 2016, to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday, the Queen was joined by her heirs in a portrait taken by Ranald Mackechnie. This third ‘four generations’ photo has been released to mark the start of a new decade.
