The King follows in his mother’s footsteps as he invites the Royal Family to Windsor Castle for Christmas lunch

The King hosted a traditional pre-Christmas dinner at Windsor Castle on Tuesday for members of The Royal Family.

Senior royals and extended members of the family are invited to enjoy Christmas dinner with the monarch each year – a rare occasion where everybody gets together.

During her reign, Queen Elizabeth II always hosted this large gathering at Buckingham Palace a few days before Christmas.

This gives extended members of The Royal Family who will not travel to Sandringham over the festive period the chance to gather together.

However, in a change from Queen Elizabeth II, Christmas lunch took place at Windsor Castle, not Buckingham Palace as was usually the case.

Dozens of royals attended the lunch hosted by The King and Queen – the first full gathering since before the pandemic.

The first royals to arrive were King Charles and Queen Camilla. They were followed by the Earl and Countess of Wessex and their children.

Also seen arriving at Windsor Castle was Princess Anne and her family, including Zara and Mike Tindall.

The Prince and Princess of Wales weren’t photographed arriving, however, they have been living inside the grounds of Windsor Castle for a number of months since relocating from Kensington Palace.

The King and Queen are expected to travel to Sandringham House in the coming days where they will spend Christmas.

Sandringham has been privately owned by the royal family since 1862 after it was purchased by Queen Victoria at the request of her son and future King, Prince Edward.
