The Earl of Wessex sent a message of support to British Paralympians as the 2020 Paralympic Games are scheduled to begin this week in Tokyo.
In a video shared to the Royal Family social media accounts, Edward sends his best wishes to the competitors, and says that he hopes that the surreal aspects of these Games, “in particular the lack of any spectators,” won’t detract from the main purpose of those gathering, “which is, of course, the competition.”
Edward is the royal patron of the Great Britain and Northern Ireland Paralympic team. He told the competitors: “You can be sure that your family, friends and supporters will be there in spirit, following you all on the screen and expending plenty of energy and frustration by shouting at it, fruitlessly.”
In addition to the video, the Royal Family shared photos of Commonwealth Paralympians from Australia, Canada, and New Zealand alongside British champions.
“We all send you massive congratulations on being selected. You now have the chance to compete against the very best in the world, and indeed to win. And more importantly, we want you to go out there and to achieve your best, make us proud and inspire the next generation of athletes with a disability.
“And whatever happens, I hope you have a brilliant experience in Japan. The Paralympic Games is a unique event, and the Japanese will undoubtedly try to make it a memorable one for you and your fellow competitors, so enjoy the moment and once again, good luck!”
There are 221 athletes competing on behalf of ParalympicsGB at the upcoming Games. At the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio, Team Great Britain placed second in total medal count, with 147 medals won.
The 2020 Paralympic Games run from 24 August to 5 September in Tokyo.
