The Duke of Cambridge pays tribute to ambulance staff lost to Covid

William, Duke of Cambridge

The Duke of Cambridge has written a letter of support for The Ambulance Staff Charity as they mark the contribution of members during the pandemic.

William’s letter coincided with TASC’s National Ambulance Service video, honouring those personnel who have lost their lives. The Ambulance Staff Charity organises a service every two years, with 2020’s taking place on 18 September, in a small service adhering to COVID-19 guidelines.

The charity plans to host another event in 2021 to allow ambulance personnel the chance to gather in person.

William’s letter reads:

“This year has been like no other and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all ambulance personnel across the U.K. for their extraordinary commitment throughout this incredibly challenging time.

“For the nation, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought into sharp focus the sacrifices made by the emergency responder community. Yet we must not forget the courage and dedication with which paramedics and ambulance staff do their duty – protecting the interests of others and saving lives – each and every day.

“Tragically, some have paid the ultimate price for that courage and others have had experiences that will hold lasting effects on their physical health or mental wellbeing. It is today that we remember them.

“For those on the frontline, the next few months will undoubtedly be a challenge. But you are a testament to this country and I cannot thank you enough for all that you do.”

Earlier this month, William also marked Air Ambulance Week. In his letter of 7 September, he wrote about how ambulance personnel have had to adapt to the pandemic to continue their vital work.

“The outbreak of COVID-19 has presented an immeasurably difficult challenge to all emergency responders. You have had to adapt to new ways of working throughout the pandemic – while continuing to provide a crucial lifeline to those who need it most. However, I know from experience that a wonderful spirit runs through the air ambulance community and I encourage everyone to continue to take time to support one another through these difficult times.”

He continued, “Your tireless dedication to saving lives and helping those in times of greatest need is a source of huge pride for our country.”
