The Crown jewels stolen in a raid

In royal adjacent news, The Crown’s jewels have been stolen. The pieces that stood in for the crown jewels (currently stored at the Tower of London) on Netflix’s The Crown were stolen in an overnight raid last Wednesday evening.

Netflix stores many of the props used in the popular drama covering the modern House of Windsor at a Doncaster warehouse. The replica Crown Jewels were among several items stolen, with the total value stolen in excess of £150,000. The items were stolen from three vans that were parked outside of the warehouse as the show is finishing up filming the fifth season.

Items stolen include the replica Crown Jewels, a replica of a Fabergé egg that King George V bought in 1933, the Imperial Coronation Coach Egg that Fabergé created in 1897, and several pieces of silverware.

Netflix have asked for the items to be returned, as many are rare antiques themselves. However, the streaming company does not expect filming to be held up because of the thefts, and the production is working to find replacement pieces immediately.

The Crown does not have a specific air date yet, but it was announced in January 2022 that the fifth season would air in November this year. Olivia Colman has finished her two seasons of playing The Queen, following Claire Foy, and Imelda Staunton will be taking up Elizabeth’s mantle in the 1990s and 2000s.

The fifth season will cover several notable moments in modern royal history, including the late Princess of Wales’ 1995 Panorama interview with Martin Bashir, as well as her death in 1997 in Paris. Jonathan Pryce is taking over as Prince Philip from Tobias Menzies, Dominc West is replacing Josh O’Connor as Prince Charles, and Elizabeth Debicki will be playing the late Princess of Wales after Emma Corrin.
