Crown Prince Haakon cancels holiday after the invasion of Ukraine

Crown Prince Haakon in January 2021

His Royal Highness Crown Prince Haakon has cancelled his holiday abroad and returned home on Friday. This is in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Norwegian Crown Prince and Crown Princess return to Norway so that the Crown Prince’s Regent can take care of the office of head of state. This was reported by the Norwegian Royal Court to the Norwegian News Agency NTB.

The entire Norwegian royal family has been on holiday somewhere abroad this week to celebrate King Harald’s 85th birthday. Head of communications at the Norwegian Royal Court, told NTB that the Crown Prince and Crown Princess will return home, but will not say anything about when it will happen. It was also not stated what the rest of the royal family will do.

The Norwegian TV channel NRK reported on Friday morning that Crown Prince Haakon has arrived in Norway, as the Crown Prince’s flag has been raised at the Royal Palace in Oslo.

This is done as a measure to increase Norway’s preparedness. If there is a need, only the sitting monarch of Norway has the opportunity to order Norway’s forces in combat mode. As King Harald is still abroad and Crown Prince Haakon is the legal regent, Crown Prince Haakon will have the opportunity to give the necessary orders to the military in Norway.
