The Crown begins filming in poignant place still tied to royalty

The Netflix hit-show The Crown has begun filming for its 6th season at St Andrews University, in Scotland.

The show’s next season will focus on Prince William’s twenties, while also exploring the storylines surrounding the divorce of Charles and Diana, then Prince and Princess of Wales, and the leaking of phone conversations between Prince Charles and Camilla.

St Andrews University was the background of Prince William’s first meeting with Catherine Middleton, and the beginning of the love story that brought them to be today’s Prince and Princess of Wales.

Several streets have been closed in the town around the university complex to allow production to film several scenes at that location.

Actors Ed McVey and Meg Bellamy will be playing Prince William and Catherine, respectively, and some curious fans of the show have already taken some pictures of the cast in costume in between takes.

But other royal watchers have raised questions about the appropriateness of shooting the show in that particular location, given that the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh’s eldest child, Lady Louise, is currently enrolled at St Andrews University as a student of English.

The show’s fifth season released on Netflix on the 6th of November 2022, making several people upset, as they felt it was disrespectful towards members of the Royal Family, who were still mourning the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

The 6th season, which will be the show’s last, is expected to cover Queen Elizabeth II’s reign from the mid-1990s until the early 2000s, possibly including the deaths of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret – both passed away in 2002.

Prince William entered St Andrews University in 2000, following a gap year. There, he met fellow pupil Catherine Middleton, with whom he started a relationship that led to the couple’s engagement in November 2010, marriage in April 2011 and the birth of three children: Prince George in July 2013, Princess Charlotte in May 2015 and Prince Louis in 2018.

On the 9th of September 2022, following King Charles’ accession, they became Prince and Princess of Wales, and are expected to be the next Monarch and Queen Consort.
