Prince Harry hosts Michelle Obama for tea at Kensington Palace

First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, received the royal treatment on Tuesday as she paid a visit to Kensington Palace to have morning tea with Prince Harry. Mrs Obama is on the first leg of her week-long European tour with her daughters Sasha and Malia as well as her mother, Marian Robinson.

Though Michelle Obama and Prince Harry’s meeting was private and closed to the media, they are known to have spoken about their mutual desire to help military families whilst also finding the time to discuss the First Lady’s ‘Let Girls Learn’ initiative. The scheme which promotes education for adolescent girls across the globe.

Tuesdays visit was not Prince Harry’s first meeting with Michelle Obama. On a United States visit back in 2013, Prince Harry visited the White House for a ‘Joining Forces’ event honouring military mothers. It was on this trip that the First Lady and Harry bonded over their work they do all they can t help military families and veterans. During Harry’s time in the United States, Mrs Obama commented, “We are absolutely thrilled that he could be with us today. He wanted to be here to personally thank you for your service.”

Michelle Obama is the wife of the 44th President of the United States of America, Barack Obama. Born in Chicago, Michelle and Barack Obama married in 1992. Since his first term as President began in 2008, Mrs Obama has focused her attention on tackling current social issues including that of helping military families, helping working women and encouraging national service.

As well as morning tea with Prince Harry, Michelle Obama also visited students at Mulberry School for Girls in London. There she spoke about the need to expand access to education with former Australian Prime Minister, Julia Gillard. Having previously spoke on the subject with Prince Harry, Mrs Obama passed on a message from the prince to the students, “He said, it’s important to have male voices at the table on this issue because often it’s going to be the brother or the father in a community speaking up.”

On Tuesday afternoon, Michelle Obama met with David and Samantha Cameron and on Wednesday will depart the United Kingdom for Italy where her official duty will be to lead the US delegation at the Milan Expo 2015.

After his meeting with the First Lady, Prince Harry joined The Queen and other royals at Royal Ascot.
