Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are welcome in Canada now that The Queen has said that the couple will split their time between the UK and Canada during a “period of transition.”
Yesterday, the Prime Minister said to Global News, “I think most Canadians are very supportive of having royals be here, but how that looks and what kind of costs are involved, there are still lots of discussions to have.
“There is a general feeling of appreciation for the Sussexes.”
He added that the Canadian government has not yet been involved “up until this point” regarding security and other arrangements and costs. “There are still a lot of decisions to be taken by the royal family, by the Sussexes themselves as to what level of engagement they choose to have,” he said.
The Prime Minister added, “We are obviously supportive of their reflections but have responsibilities in that as well… We’re not entirely sure what the final decisions will be.”
Back in November when it was announced that the Sussexes were spending their six-week break from royal duties in Canada with their son, Archie, Trudeau tweeted, “Prince Harry, Meghan, and Archie, we’re all wishing you a quiet and blessed stay in Canada. You’re among friends, and always welcome here.”
The Sussexes returned to the UK last week for an engagement at Canada House where they wanted to show their appreciation for the warmth and reception they received while they were on their private visit. They announced their decision to step back from senior royal roles the following day.
The Duchess returned to Canada last week after the announcement while the Duke remained behind to iron out details on their step back from royal duties. He is expected to join her and Archie later this week after his event on Thursday.
