They’re Europe’s top football nations right now and, luckily, they match each other when it comes to passionate royal fans. England and Spain have a battle royale in the royal box for the final of the Euros. And before kick off, it seems Spain is edging it as a real royal football aficionado shows their support.
Infanta Sofia, younger daughter of King Felipe, is a noted keen football fan and attends a wide range of matches. She was in Australia to see Spain win the Women’s World Cup, beating England, and now she’ll be in Berlin to see if the men can repeat that success in this year’s Euros.
She’ll be with her father, King Felipe, at the Olympic Stadium as Spain attempt to triumph in the competition for the fourth time – they were champions in 1964, 2008 and 2012.
The Prince of Wales will also head to Berlin to see England’s men attempt to win the Euros for the first time. He was in London to see the Lionesses clinch the Euros in 2022.
It will put the royal seal on the biggest match in European football.
The Euros have had plenty of royal support throughout the four week contest.
King Frederik X of Denmark and his younger daughter, Princess Josephine, headed out to Germany to show support for their national side while King Philippe of the Belgians took three of his four children along for one of the Red Devils’ matches. Prince Gabriel, second in line to the throne, seemed particularly pleased with the result although this wasn’t to be Belgium’s tournament.
The Prince of Wales has already watched England play Denmark in the first round of the Euros and was back in Germany for the quarter final against Switzerland.
King Charles led the congratulations for the team when they went through to the final after a last minute win against the Netherlands. His Majesty also asked England to think of everyone’s nerves back home and try to win the final without going to penalties.
