King Frederik and Queen Mary are officially on their first summer break as King and Queen, and visitors will now be able to see the Changing of the Guard at Gråsten Palace.
Gråsten Palace is in Gråsten (in Southern Jutland) and has been the summer residence of the Danish Royal Family for nearly a century.
When the Danish monarch is in residence at GrÃ¥sten, the Royal Life Guard marches daily to the castle for the Changing of the Guard ceremony. On Fridays, the Changing will end with a concert at the castle that visitors can enjoy.Â
King Frederik and Queen Mary watched over the ceremony for their first Friday in Gråsten. The couple looked happy to be at Gråsten and were dressed in casual summer clothing for the day. They were also joined by their collie, Grace, who looked to be having fun on her vacation, as well.
The palace at Gråsten is the fourth palace on the site. The first small hunting lodge burned down, and was replaced in 1603 with a palace. This second palace was torn down a century later to build a Baroque-style building more in-tune with current architectural preferences. The current Rococo-style palace was built in 1759.
Queen Margrethe would spend her summers at Gråsten Palace surrounded by her family. Her sisters, Princess Benedikte and Queen Anne-Marie of Greece, would often join her.
