The Queen’s rider who finished 2nd place at Royal Ascot is suspended

James Doyle, the rider of The Queen’s horse Magnetic Charm, has received a two-day suspension for using his whip in an incorrect place.

Mr Doyle rode Magnetic Charm into 2nd place in the Sandringham Stakes at Royal Ascot.

However, following an investigation by the British Horseracing Authority Stewards, the jockey has received a two-day suspension from the sport for “using his whip in an incorrect place on the run to the line.”

Despite the jockey’s misuse of the whip, the result of the race stands meaning Her Majesty still finished in second place and takes home £16,776 in prize money.

Interestingly, Hayley Turner, who was the only rider to beat The Queen’s horse into 1st position in the race, has also been suspended.

The jockey has been suspended for nine days and fined £1,600 for using her whip 11 times. Jockeys must not use their whip more than seven times in flat races.

As Royal Central reported on Thursday, this is not the first time Her Majesty’s riders have been suspended for whip offences.

James McDonald, who rode The Queen’s other horse Eightsome Reel, received a two-day suspension for overusing his whip on Thursday.

Her Majesty’s horse finished a very respectable 4th position in the Hampton Court Stakes at the racecourse.

However, following an investigation by the British Horseracing Authority Stewards, the jockey received a short suspension from the sport for using his whip above the permitted level from approaching the final two furlongs.

Despite the jockey’s overenthusiastic use of the whip, the result of the race also remained unchanged, meaning Her Majesty took home £4,824 for finishing in fourth position.
