The Queen has issued a statement addressed to all Canadians following the van attack that happened in Toronto on Monday.
Ten people were killed in the attack and 13 were injured when a van mounted the kerb and drove straight into pedestrians along a 1km stretch.
In a statement released on Wednesday morning, the Queen said: “Prince Philip and I join all Canadians in expressing our sadness following the terrible tragedy that occurred in Toronto yesterday.
“We offer our deepest condolences to the families and friends of those who were lost, as well as our hopes for full recovery to all who were injured and affected by this incident. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.”
The driver of the van, Alek Minassian, 25, was arrested seven blocks away from the scene of the attack after a standoff with police. He was charged on Tuesday with ten counts of murder and 13 counts of attempted murder.
Police say he appeared to intentionally strike the pedestrians in the rental van he was driving. Minutes before the attack happened, Mr Minassian posted to Facebook praising killer Elliot Rodger who murdered six people in a shooting rampage in California back in 2014 before shooting himself.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the incident a “senseless attack and a horrific tragedy”.
In a statement, he said: “On behalf of all Canadians, I offer my heartfelt condolences to the loved ones of those who were killed, and my thoughts for a fast and full recovery to those injured.
“I thank the first responders at the scene who managed this extremely difficult situation with courage and professionalism. They faced danger without hesitation, and their efforts no doubt saved lives and prevented further injuries.”
Her Majesty The Queen is also the Queen of Canada, with the nation also being one of the 53 members of the Commonwealth.
