The Queen has sent her congratulations to athletes from Britain and the Commonwealth as the Tokyo Olympic Games come to a close.
In a special message released just hours after the XXXII Olympiad ended, The Queen described those who had taken part as an ”inspiration” in ”unique and challenging times”.#
The full message, sent on August 9th 2021, reads:
I send my warmest congratulations to the competitors from Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and across the Commonwealth, following their success at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in recent weeks.
The skill, determination and hard work shown by the athletes and their support teams throughout the unique and challenging circumstances of the last year has been an inspiration to us all.
I extend my very best wishes to everyone who has played a part in this extraordinary achievement.

The Games of the XXXII Olympiad, postponed for a year because of the ongoing pandemic, drew to a close on August 8th 2021. The next Olympics will take place in Paris in 2024.
