Royals send congratulations to sports stars as Tokyo Olympics come to an end

Sports stars across Europe have received royal congratulations as the Tokyo Olympics come to an end. Kings, queens, princes and princesses have sent messages of celebration to their country’s Olympians as the Games of the XXXII Olympiad finished.

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands issued a special statement as the flame was extinguished on Tokyo, focusing on the number of medals won by Dutch stars, saying ”What a fantastic and historic harvest. In challenging conditions, #TeamNL has won a record number of medals…and the medal day record of Amsterdam 1928 has been broken.”

King Harald led his royal family’s celebration of Olympics success. The monarch, who competed in the last Olympics held in Tokyo in 1964, has sent special telegrams to all Norwegian gold medallists to mark their success. There was also a message to the country’s entire team, which read ”The Royal Family congratulates all the Norwegian athletes on a fantastic effort at the Tokyo Olympics.”

Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark took to the official royal Instagram to mark the end of the Olympics. In a personal message, the heir to the throne said ”although it has been a different Olympics, it’s been a great Olympics for Denmark…..thank you to all 111 Danish athletes who have fought bravely and made us proud. Each of you has represented our country in the most distinguished way.”

The Spanish royal also had a special message for their stars, sent via official social media. They celebrated the medallists, thanked those athletes whose careers are coming to an end for their inspiration and looked to the future. The congratulations ended with a poignant note, saying ”you have all given us moments of great joy, just by competing in these Olympics…celebrated in difficult times for all. You are the heart of Spain.”

The Prince of Wales had an eye on the future, too, in a message sent on the official Clarence House Twitter. It read ”Congratulations to the #TeamGB athletes, on your incredible #Tokyo2020 performance! You did brilliantly. Wishing the best of luck to those preparing for the #Paralympics.”

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge also sent a congratulatory message, saying ”What an amazing #Tokyo2020 Olympic Games, TeamGB – you’ve all shown such strength, passion and determination in challenging circumstances and have done the nation incredibly proud!

Several royal families are already planning in person celebrations with their Olympic stars. King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima are set to meet athletes in the coming days while Crown Prince Frederik will attend a special event for Olympians.
