This past year was a big one for the British Royal Family. The birth of Prince Louis, the wedding of Prince Harry to the then Meghan Markle and another royal wedding of Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank.
All these stories and more have dominated the headlines, so it doesn’t come to a surprise that royalty is always on our minds.
For new families welcoming little bundles of joy into their lives, names like George, Charlotte, and Louis have jumped in popularity thanks to the young royals. But you don’t have to have a child to create a namesake. Pets are also big in the royal name game.
Rover.com compiled data from dog owners in the United States over the last year and noticed that dogs named after royals jumped 11 per cent. The names Harry and Meghan both rose 133 per cent and 129 per cent respectively in 2018.
The seventh most popular dog name is Duke. As for the top royal dog names, Sophie, Charlie, George, Prince, Charlotte, and Harry take the cake.
Just like the 94 per cent of people surveyed who consider their dog a member of their family, these pups also play a big part in the everyday lives of the Royal Family.
Queen Elizabeth is known for her love of corgis, sadly putting Willow, her last corgi down this year.
Willow was nearly 15 years old but had to put down due to cancer-related illnesses. She was a direct descendant of Her Majesty’s first pet corgi, Susan.
Her parents gifted her with Susan when she turned 18. And the corgis she has bred ever since have been direct descendants of her first dog.
Sugar and Honey were her first puppies born just four years later. Over the last seven decades, The Queen has owned over 30 corgis. She still has two dorgis, Vulcan and Candy.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have two dogs. Guy, Meghan’s rescue beagle who made the move to London with Meghan and another dog they adopted in August whos name is yet to be released.
The Cambridge family has Lupo, an English Cocker Spaniel, who has appeared in many family pictures including some of the first photos of Prince George.
The Duchess of Cornwall is also a big fan; she adopted Bluebell and Beth, Jack Russel Terriers from the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home which she is Patron of.
