Queen Elizabeth’s Wikipedia page was the third most visited entry in 2017

The Queen has beaten out the likes of Barack Obama, Elon Musk, and TV series such a Game of Thrones to become the third most visited Wikipedia page in 2017.

Her Wikipedia entry had 19.2 million views, coming behind Donald trump with 29.6 million and a list of Deaths in 2017 which had 37.3 million views.

A Wikipedia editor said The Queen’s ranking struck him most. He said that the ranking was “Phenomenal when you consider the fame and ubiquity of many of the entries which fall below her.”

He added, “I think that the continued strong performance should act to dispel the myth that no one cares about the monarchy.”

The Queen’s ranking was most likely helped from Prince Harry’s marriage to Meghan Markle as well as the popular TV series The Crown. The Queen’s popularity on Wikipedia peaked on December the 10th when the second season of The Crown was released.

The Queen wasn’t the only royal to featured on the list. Meghan Markle was the 5th most popular article on Wikipedia, which peaked on the day of their engagement announcement.

Prince Philip was also featured on the list, coming at rank 44. The Wikipedia editor contributes the popularity of his article to The Crown’s portrayal of him by Matt Smith, as well as his retirement from public duties. His article peaked on the 4th when his retirement from public duties was announced.

Current and future royals aren’t the only ones featured on the list. Queen Victoria made the top 50 list coming in at rank 13 with 14.1 million views. Over the past year, she has been the subject of the ITV series Victoria and Victoria & Abdul. Her article peaked after Victoria was premiered in the USA.

Princess Margaret also comes in on the list at rank 37, just behind Melania Trump. Her popularity on Wikipedia is also attributed to The Crown which was partly responsible for many of the Royals popularity on the site.

The Royal families popularity is likely into next year by the much anticipated Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
