Queen Camilla signs her name into history at the emotional Accession Council of her husband, King Charles

The new Queen Consort has signed her name ‘Camilla R’ publicly for the first time.

Her Majesty signed a series of declarations this morning at the Accession Council which led to the formal proclamation of her husband as King Charles III.

And she used the ‘R’ which for centuries has denoted the signature of a king or queen. It is an abbreviation of the Latin for queen, regina.

The King was also seen signing ‘Charles R’ publicly for the first time.

Queen Camilla is a member of the Privy Council and so was present at the Accession Council. She formed part of the Declaration Party along with the Prince of Wales, the Prime Minister, the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Archbishop of York, among others. They listed as the Lord President of the Council, Penny Morduant, declared the death of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the succession of King Charles III before signing the Proclamation Declaration and then being called upon to wait on His Majesty.

Shortly afterwards, Queen Camilla accompanied King Charles into the Throne Room at St. James’ Palace where His Majesty made his own declaration to the Accession Council, promising to serve. He also made an oath to the Church of Scotland and signed a declaration to that effect along with the Queen and the Prince of Wales.

The King, Queen and Prince all left the room and weren’t present at the formal proclamation which took place at Friary Court at St. James’ Palace.

Just after 11am on September 10th 2022, the Garter King at Arms declared that ”the Prince Charles Philip Arthur George, is now, by the death of our late Sovereign of happy memory, become our only lawful and rightful liege lord, Charles III, by the grace of God, of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, and of his other realms and territories, King.”

His Majesty was also proclaimed Head of the Commonwealth and Defender of the Faith.
