Private re-dedication of Diana, Princess of Wales grave to be attended by her sons

On what would have been Diana, Princess of Wales 56th birthday, her two sons, Princes William and Harry will attend a re-dedication of her grave.

The service of re-dedication will take place in a private ceremony at Althorp House in Northamptonshire this coming Saturday. Althorp House is Diana’s childhood home, now run by her brother, Earl Spencer.

The service will also be attended by the Duchess of Cambridge, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Earl Spencer and Diana’s two sisters.

Prince Charles, who was previously married to Diana and had their two sons together will be in Canada to mark the 150th birthday of the country. The Duchess of Cornwall will also be accompanying him there.

Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby will conduct the service that falls just shy of two months before the 20th anniversary of Diana’s untimely death.

On 31 August 1997, Diana and her partner, Dodi Fayed were killed in a Paris car accident after the press chased their vehicle down. Prince William was only 15-years-old at the time and Prince Harry 12.

The princes are keeping the anniversary of her death low key with a commissioned statue of their mother that will be placed in the public gardens of Kensington Palace, her former home and now the home of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry.

In a statement released at the announcement of the statue, Princes William and Harry said:

“It has been 20 years since our mother’s death and the time is right to recognise her positive impact in the UK and around the world with a permanent statue.

“Our mother touched so many lives. We hope the statue will help all those who visit Kensington Palace to reflect on her life and her legacy.

An all-white garden was also planted up in her memory.

Other London memorials in Diana’s honour that have previously been built are the Princess Diana Memorial Fountain in Hyde Park and the memorial garden near Kensington Palace.
