Princess Anne’s style: 1990s to today

Princess Anne is attending London Fashion Week this week so we are looking back at her style through the years.

Anne’s style has never been the main fashion story in the Royal Family as there was always a more trendy dresser in the headlines. Anne’s sporty and utilitarian style mirrored her work and was steady and consistent but never drew the most headlines.

Perhaps her most signature and high profile outfit of this current timeframe was her outfit for her wedding to Timothy Laurence in 1992. The wedding was Anne’s second and during a tumultuous time for the Royal Family as Charles and Diana’s split was announced days before the wedding. Therefore, Anne opted for a low key outfit for the wedding at Crathie Kirk in Scotland. She chose a simple and sleek white jacket over a high neck and knee length white dress.

In recent years, Princess Anne has become known as one of the Royal Family’s most prolific wardrobe recyclers. She has brought back pieces from decades ago, observers commenting on her resourcefulness and the timelessness of some of her pieces.

One such example was a mustard yellow hat that she debuted at Zara’s christening in 1981 and then brought back more than 30 years later for a 2013 visit to Lake Windemore. Staying with the mustard theme, a much-loved mustard coat ensemble was debuted by Anne at Trooping the Colour and reworn many times, including to Royal Ascot 2015.

She also recycled some of her more statement pieces. A yellow and purple gown first worn to the 1990 premiere of NeverEnding Story II was reworn for the 70th birthday party of King Constantine of Greece in 2010. She also debuted a pink ensemble at the 1990 BAFTAs that she rewore in 2001 at the Save the Children Festival of Trees. This one did require some modification though as the original featured a pink shirt with puffy sleeves. Puffy sleeves were very much a trend in the early 90s but a little dated in 2001 so Anne had it modified to lose the poof.

Even outfits worn to major events such as the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton or her own daughter Zara’s wedding have been reworn several times. When Anne makes fashion headlines recently it is usually an article highlighting her resourcefulness and many examples of recycling.

Similar to her mother, she favours coat looks that often have bright colour or patterns but are very timeless. Anne’s fashion may never drive headlines, but it is professional, understated, and consistent which is a good representation of who Anne is as a working royal.
