ICYMI: British Vogue feels the Meghan effect

This past week both the Sussex’s official Instagram account and British Vogue editor Edward Enninful looked back at the September 2019 issues of the magazine that Meghan guest-edited. Titled ‘Forces for Change’ it proved to be quite a force and an example of the power the royals, and particularly Meghan, have.

The issue highlights 15 women who are “forces for change” in various industries but famously did not include Meghan on the cover. That did not lessen Meghan’s impact on the issue though. Enninful took to Twitter to highlight that it was the fastest-selling issue in British Vogue’s history and to note that it sold out in 10 days. This shows that even without her photo on the cover, Meghan’s name is still a big draw.

British Vogue has seen an increase in subscribers and circulation since Enninful became editor in 2017, but this edition outpaced even their current growth. Enninful added that the ‘Forces for Change’ edition was the biggest selling issue of British Vogue of the decade. To achieve such a feat as the circulation of print media is on a steep decline industry-wide is quite an accomplishment.

Knowing the power that Harry and Meghan’s name has leads to a few questions given their life outside of the Royal Family as private citizens. One is if this mega influence will continue to hold even though they are no longer working royals. Given the intense media attention they’ve received during their time in Canada, it seems that they still will have a massive influence, at least for the next few years but perhaps beyond.

The other is what kind of ventures the Sussexes will choose to utilise this massive influence. Of course, they are likely to use it for their new foundation and other charitable adventures. However, now that they are free to earn private income, there are no doubt many lucrative opportunities on the table.

What are some things you’d like to see the Duke and Duchess of Sussex do now that they will no longer be working royals from spring?
