Since Meghan Markle revealed in the royal engagement interview that she and Prince Harry had originally been set up on a blind date by a mutual friend, royal watchers have been speculating as to the identity of the royal matchmaker. The mystery has now potentially been solved, with the E! News network revealing that the pair were introduced through Prince Harry’s childhood friend, Violet von Westenholz.
Prince Harry and von Westenholz have been friends since their teens and that is why he turned to his old friend for help when he was “having a really hard time finding anyone”, according to E! News’s source. The insider added that “He can hardly go on Tinder or a dating app like normal people, but to meet someone that you actually connect with, that was proving to be almost impossible…It was something he had confided in his closest friends about; he was ready to meet someone but it was so hard to actually find the right person.”
The media has speculated on a wide number of potential matchmakers in recent months with much focus on Ms Markle’s best friend and stylist Jessica Mulroney and fashion designer Misha Nonoo after the couple revealed it had been a woman. Though von Westenholz’s name did come up, the PR director for Ralph Lauren was not seen as a main contender despite the fact she has appeared on Markle’s now-deleted Instagram page and the two appeared at Wimbledon together in 2016, the same month in which Ms Markle and Prince Harry are thought to have gone on their first date.
Sharing more about how the match came about, the E! insider said that “Meghan had been a part of the London social scene for a while and had slotted into the high society set really easily. And so when Harry told Violet he was having trouble finding someone, Violet said she might just have the perfect girl for him.”
Von Westenholz has not confirmed her involvement saying only that she’ll leave the speculation and revelation of the matchmaker’s identity “for other people to say” according to Metro U.K. She added that it’s “a great story and I am sure they are going to be very happy together. I am just happy they are really happy. They are great together.”
