Prince Andrew has been stripped of the honorary Freedom of the City of York that he has held for over thirty years.
The decision to remove the honour came in a vote at City of York Council on April 27th 2022.
Councillors voted unanimously to remove the Freedom of the City from Andrew with two abstaining from the ballot.
They also called on him to give up his title of Duke of York.
Councillor Darryl Smalley of the Liberal Democrats, who brought the motion, said afterwards that Andrew should relinquish his dukedom or ”the Government and Buckingham Palace must step in to remove his title”.
Prince Andrew was granted the honorary Freedom of the City in 1987, a year after he was made Duke of York on the day he married Sarah Ferguson. The dukedom is traditionally given to the second sons of Monarchs.
The vote on the honour was called following the civil court case taken in the US in which Prince Andrew was accused of sexual assault by Virginia Giuffre. He denied the allegations. However, he settled the case out of court for an undisclosed sum of money.
Prince Andrew is the first person ever to be stripped of the honorary Freedom of the City of York.
