The Scottish Grand National postponed out of respect for the Duke of Edinburgh

The annual Scottish Grand National held at Ayr Racecourse has been postponed out of respect for the Duke of Edinburgh.

Scotland’s most famous steeplechase was due to take place next Saturday at 3:35pm – the exact moment of Prince Philip’s funeral.

In light of this, it has been announced that the Scottish National will now take place 24 hours later than planned on Sunday.

Similarly, day two of Newbury’s Spring Trials fixture has been moved to the Sunday.

There will be no horse racing in Britain between 2:45pm and 4:15pm on Saturday as a mark of respect to The Queen’s husband who died on Friday at the age of 99.

Despite a period of national mourning, Saturday’s Grand National meeting at Aintree racecourse did go ahead as planned.

Jockeys wore black armbands and all of those present observed a two minutes silence.

The Grand National was won by Minella Times, trained by Henry De Bromhead and riden by Rachael Blackmore – the first women to win the race in the event’s 182-year history.

The win has been hailed as a landmark moment for women in sport.
