Military uniform for working members of Royal Family at Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral – and not for Prince Andrew

All working members of the Royal Family will wear military uniform for the processions and funeral of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The Duke of York will not be permitted to wear uniform

However, Prince Andrew will be permitted to wear military uniform when he keeps vigil at the coffin of his mother during the lying in state at Westminster Hall.

This would also indicate that the Duke of Sussex will not be in military uniform as he is not now a working member of the Royal Family.

There are five occasions when military uniform will be worn. They are on September 12th 2022 for the procession from Holyroodhouse Palace to St. Giles’ Cathedral when the coffin of Her Late Majesty will be conveyed to the church. A Service of Thanksgiving will then follow.

The next instance will be September 14th 2022 when the funeral procession moves from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall where Queen Elizabeth II will lie in state.

Following that, all members of the Royal Family keeping vigil at the lying in state will wear military uniform if they are permitted to do so. On this instance, that will include Prince Andrew as he attends his mother’s coffin as her son first and foremost.

The State Funeral on September 19th 2022 will see all members wearing military uniform but not the Duke of York.

Later that day, it will also be worn at the Service of Committal for Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor.

The Duke of York lost all his military associations, as well as his patronages and the right to use his HRH in public following a court case which he settled privately, having been accused of sexual assault, a charge he denied.
