Day by day guide to Queen Elizabeth II’s lying in state and funeral: September 12 2022

The coffin of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is now at Holyroodhouse Palace in Edinburgh from where it will move to St. Giles Cathedral ahead of the first lying in state.

King Charles III will be at the Houses of Parliament before heading to Edinburgh. Here’s a step by step outline of what to expect on September 12th 2022 as the UK says farewell to The Queen and begins the new reign of The King.

LONDON – AM

The Houses of Commons and Lords will gather in Westminster Hall to await King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

The King and Queen will arrive at Westminster Hall at the Palace of Westminster to a royal fanfare. His Majesty and Her Majesty will receive the condolences of the House of Commons and of the House of Lords. His Majesty The King will give a speech.

The King and Queen will depart London for Scotland

EDINBURGH – AM

The coffin of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will lie in the Throne Room of the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Members of the Royal Family, including the Princess Royal, will be in attendance.

EDINBURGH – PM

King Charles III and Queen Camilla arrive at Edinburgh Airport.

The King and Queen travel to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. The King and Queen attend the Ceremony of the Keys at Holyroodhouse.

His Majesty King Charles III will lead the procession behind the coffin of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II from Holyroodhouse to St. Giles’ Cathedral.

King Charles III, Queen Camilla and members of the Royal Family will attend a Service of Thanksgiving for the life of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at St. Giles’ Cathedral.

King Charles III will return to Holyroodhouse where he will receive the First Minister of Scotland. His Majesty will later receive the Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament.

The King and Queen will attend the Scottish Parliament where they will receive a Motion of Condolence.

The King and Queen will attend a reception for members of the Scottish Parliament.

His Majesty King Charles III and other members of the Royal Family will attend a Vigil for Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at St. Giles’ Cathedral

St. Giles’ Cathedral remains open to allow members of the public to pay their respects to Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
