The Royal Family has shared an exciting milestone on their Instagram account: King Charles has helped rehome the British Hen Welfare Trust’s millionth hen at Highgrove Gardens.
Henrietta the hen and thirty of her friends have been rehomed at Highgrove, The King’s private home in Gloucestershire. The hens arrived at Highgrove last week and are settling into their new home nicely, where their surroundings include an appropriately hen-sized country home.
King Charles himself named Henrietta, one of the newest arrivals at Highgrove Gardens.
The British Hen Welfare Trust made the move possible, with volunteers helping to move the hens to their new home and then helping them feel comfortable at their new home.
As explained on Instagram, ”The British Hen Welfare Trust works hard with an incredible network of over 1,400 volunteers and 48 rehoming sites around the UK to save and rehome over 60,000 commercial laying hens each year.”
The BHWT was originally founded in 2005 by Jane Howorth; she was awarded an MBE in the 2016 New Year’s Honours list for her work with the charity. The group’s main goals include raising public awareness about the living conditions of commercial chickens and to better support the British egg industry.
